Let’s all agree, regardless of what side you were on; we can all agree, thank the stars Brexit has finally happened. It’s official; we have now left the European Union.

How it all pans out is anyone’s guess. It may be the greatest thing to happen for Britain, or it could be a disaster. That’s something we will all come to learn the answer for in time to come. Once the withdrawal agreement was ratified and signed into law, Britain entered the transition period.

Given the cost to leave has as of February 2020 almost come out at £200 billion hopefully it was the right decision. No that is not a fanciful figure, but to put it in perspective, it amounts to almost the same as what we have paid toward the EU in the past 47 years. Putting aside all politics, that’s no small amount of change.

So what happens during the Brexit transition period?

The transition period or as the government refers to it as the “implementation period” is a legally agreed time frame during which we are no longer an EU member. During the implementation period, we remain, subject under the EU rules. The UK during transition also remains a member of the customs union as well as the single market.

The transitional period allows the UK and EU to sort out future trade agreements. It means sorting out future trade relationships and also security and military co-operation.

It is agreed that Citizen rights and also freedom of movement remain the same. So your travel stays unaffected until the end of the implementation period.

By the end of the transition period, there shall be vast changes. Such changes will include Passports and Visas, Immigration policies and also border control. Undoubtedly business who trade with the EU can expect changes to come into effect.

The transition period is in place until the 31st of December 2020. As mentioned above, the same freedom of movement you have been used to having remains unaffected.

Until the 31/12/2020
